What Causes Hair Loss in Women?

There are various causes of hair loss in women with key factors including hormonal changes, genetics, stress, nutritional deficiencies and medical conditions. Androgenetic alopecia (female pattern baldness) is the most common type of hair loss in women. This manifests as diffuse thinning over the crown and top of the scalp. There are also other causes including telogen effluvium, alopecia areata and traction alopecia. We mainly treat pattern hair loss as well as some cases of traction alopecia and telogen effluvium in women.

Hormonal Hair Loss in Women

Hormonal changes are very common contributors to hair thinning in women. These lead to increased androgen activity at the follicle which disrupt the hair growth cycle. Identifying the cause of thinning is essential before selecting the most appropriate treatment. The most frequent drivers of hormonal hair loss in women include:

  • Conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) which can raise androgen levels
  • Declining oestrogen levels and hormonal shifts during menopause and postpartum
  • Elevated androgen sensitivity or activity in premenopausal women

Female Pattern Hair Loss vs Telogen Effluvium

Female pattern hair loss is the most common presentation of androgenetic alopecia in women. It typically presents as gradual thinning over the crown with widening of the parting. Some women can instead develop male pattern hair loss which presents as thinning of hair on the temples and hair line first. Both forms of pattern hair loss do not improve by themselves and progressively get worse with time. Telogen effluvium is usually a temporary condition which causes sudden excessive hair shedding following stress, illness, hormonal shifts or pregnancy. Distinguishing between these patterns is important because treatment approaches differ. Female pattern hair loss often requires long-term follicle support whilst Telogen effluvium can improve by itself once the trigger resolves.

How Hair Loss Treatment Works in Women

Hair loss treatment in women focuses on stimulating active growth, reducing follicle miniaturisation and supporting scalp health. The most effective approach depends on the underlying cause of thinning and overall health. Depending on suitability, effective treatment may include:

  • Follicle stimulation: Minoxidil and Caffeine can increase blood flow to follicles and prolong the growth phase.
  • Hormone blocking: In premenopausal and postmenopausal women, Spironolactone can help reduce androgen influence on hair follicles. DHT inhibition using Finasteride or Dutasteride may be considered for some postmenopausal women where appropriate.
  • Supportive ingredients: Tretinoin or azelaic acid improve penetration of active ingredients. Melatonin may help protect follicles from antioxidant damage and steroids may reduce scalp irritation and improve tolerability.

Ingredients Used in Our Hair Loss Treatments

We always design a personalised hair loss treatment for each and every one of our patients. This may change at the end of each 3 month course to adjust to your hair’s response. These are the ingredients we may use in our topical hair loss treatment for women serums if appropriate:

We design our personalised hair loss serums based on each patient’s needs. For example in some patients, this may be achieved by using just Minoxidil. At other times we may need to primarily focus on reducing DHT levels and stimulating hair follicles. So for example, in some pre-menopausal women, this may be achieved using a combination of Minoxidil and Spironolactone. Minoxidil works by widening the blood vessels in the scalp, increasing blood flow to hair follicles, thereby delivering more oxygen and nutrients to the follicles, stimulating hair growth, and strengthening existing hair. Spironolactone helps reduce androgen levels, further preventing hair thinning. On the other hand, for a post-menopausal woman, we might use Minoxidil combined with Finasteride or Dutasteride. The Finasteride or Dutasteride aims to prevent hair follicle shrinkage.

How Long it Takes to See Results & Maintenance

Patience and consistency are key to success. As a general rule, the first 1-3 months are when the treatment is activating the hair follicles so you won’t see much. In fact, you might actually experience more hair shedding during this period! Most women begin to see noticeable improvements in hair growth within the first 3-6 months of starting treatment. After that there should be gradual gains albeit it may be at a different rate. However, individual results and time it takes to see them vary.

You will need to continue using the treatment as directed by your doctor to maintain your results. This is not a temporary treatment nor a cure for hair loss. Stopping the use of these treatments usually leads to a gradual return of hair loss. It’s a good idea to check-in regularly with your doctor so they can monitor your progress and adjust the treatment plan as needed to ensure optimal results.

Why We Focus on Topical Treatment for Women

Many women prefer a targeted approach to hair loss treatment that is sustainable long-term. We focus on personalised topical formulations because they:

  • Allow direct delivery of active ingredients to the scalp
  • Permit greater customisation in terms of strengths and ingredient combinations
  • Reduce unnecessary systemic exposure compared with oral medication

For many women, a topical approach to hair loss treatment can provide a balance between effectiveness and safety.

Frequently asked questions

Female hair loss treatment depends on the underlying cause. For female pattern hair loss, topical stimulation and androgen modulation are commonly used. In cases of telogen effluvium, addressing the trigger is often more important than long-term medication. A doctor-led assessment helps determine the most appropriate approach.

Yes. Minoxidil is widely used in women to stimulate follicles and prolong the growth phase. It can be used alone or as part of a personalised topical formulation. Suitability depends on medical history and scalp tolerance.

Hormonal changes during menopause, particularly declining oestrogen levels, can reduce hair density and increase shedding. In some women this may resemble female pattern hair loss. Treatment may involve follicle stimulation and, in selected cases, hormone-sensitive modulation.

Spironolactone is sometimes used off-license in premenopausal women where androgen sensitivity contributes to thinning. It requires medical supervision and is not suitable for everyone. Treatment decisions are made following individual assessment.

Postpartum hair shedding is usually a temporary telogen effluvium. In most cases, hair density improves over time. Persistent thinning beyond 6–12 months may require further evaluation.

Female pattern hair loss is progressive if untreated. However, appropriate treatment can stabilise thinning and improve density in many women. Early intervention tends to produce better outcomes.

Some active ingredients used for female hair loss require prescription and medical review. A structured online consultation ensures treatment is safe and appropriate.

Your doctor will review your progress once you're nearing the end of each bottle (so every 3 months) and will then create the next treatment based on your progress. This may involve adding in or removing certain ingredients or changing strengths of active ingredients.

Results can vary, but most patients start noticing improvements within 3 to 6 months of consistent use.

We do not provide hair loss treatments for anyone pregnant or breastfeeding. There are also certain ingredients such as Finasteride, Dutasteride and Tretinoin that we will not add to your formula if someone in your household is pregnant as these can cause problems with foetal development.

While our treatments are generally well-tolerated, some individuals may experience mild side effects such as dryness, flaking or scalp irritation. It is also common to initially experience increased shedding. Our team will monitor your progress and make adjustments as needed. There are additional potential side effects depending on the composition of your formula. For more info visit the individual ingredient pages.

Yes, our formulations are designed to be gentle. During your consultation, we will tailor your treatment to ensure it suits your skin type.

Hair regrowth from treatments like minoxidil, finasteride, and Dutasteride typically requires ongoing use. Discontinuing treatment may result in a gradual return of hair loss.

Our treatments are primarily designed for androgenetic alopecia (male and female pattern baldness) and other DHT-related hair loss conditions. They may not be suitable for hair loss caused by other factors, such as medical conditions or nutritional deficiencies. A consultation with one of our doctors can help determine if these treatments are right for you.

Determining the cause of hair loss can be straightforward or may require a doctor's evaluation and tests.

Men experiencing a receding hairline, patchy hair loss, or gradual thinning likely have male pattern baldness, a permanent condition treatable with various hair loss treatments.

If sudden bald patches appear without an obvious cause, seeking medical attention is crucial. Sudden hair loss might result from conditions like alopecia areata, vitamin deficiencies, or medication side effects. These types of hair loss are typically temporary and often resolve with proper treatment of the underlying issue.

Although there isn’t a cure for hair loss, but there are effective hair treatments. While these may slow hair loss or even reverse balding, they can not provide permanent treatment. Please beware of any company claiming to “cure” your hair loss.

Our hair base ingredients are:

Ethanol, Propylene Glycol, TrichosolTM- Aqua, Latic Acid, Polysorbate 20, Olivamidopropyl Betaine, Phenoxyethanol, Parfum, Rosmarinus Officinalis Leaf Oil, Lavandula Dentata Water, BHT, Juniperus Communis Fruit Oil, Juniperus Virginiana Oil, Amyris Balsmifera Bark Oil, Propanediol, Lavandula Angustifolia Oil, Melaleuca Alternifolia Leaf Oil, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil, Sodium Thiosilfate.

The amount of ethanol in the formula will vary depending on the active ingredients we add to your personalised hair loss treatment.

Compounded treatments like the ones we use are unlicensed medications because they are custom-made for each patient based on a specific formulation tailored to their unique needs. Unlike licensed medications, which are approved by regulatory bodies for general use, compounded treatments are created by pharmacists to meet the specific requirements of an individual patient as prescribed by their doctor. While they do not undergo the same approval process as licensed medications, they offer a personalised approach that can address specific concerns where a licensed treatment doesn't exist effectively under professional supervision.
