Topical Hair Loss Treatments for Men in the UK

A prescription hair loss serum to help you keep the hair you have and regrow what you can, whether you're thinning at the temples, crown or on top. Your doctor designs your treatment and adjusts it course by course. Online consultation, monitoring and delivery anywhere in the UK.

Most men notice hair loss first at the temples or the crown, often in a photo before the mirror. If you act early, treatment can usually slow the loss and often regrow some of what you’ve lost, with the first change typically showing within three to six months. The usual culprit is DHT, a hormone your follicles become sensitive to, but other factors like age and genetics also play a part. That’s why our topical hair loss treatment for men is formulated for each patient rather than picked off a shelf or from a set menu. Your doctor chooses the right actives at the right strengths for your hair loss. And from your first consultation onwards, you’ll also have the same doctor, who adjusts your serum at the end of each course as your hair responds.

What Causes Hair Loss in Men?

The main cause of hair loss in men is androgenetic alopecia or male pattern baldness. This condition is largely due to genetic factors and hormonal changes. In particular, Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) plays a major role. DHT shrinks hair follicles which can lead to thinning hair and eventual hair loss. Other factors such as stress, nutritional deficiencies and certain medical conditions can also contribute to hair loss.

Receding Hairline and Thinning Crown

Where your hair is thinning changes what treatment can realistically do, so it’s worth being honest about it. Thinning at the crown tends to show regrowth more easily. A receding hairline is harder to conceal, and the earlier you start, the better your chances of holding it and winning some back. Whether you’re thinning in one place, both or all over, your doctor will build your serum to tackle your individual pattern of hair loss.

What is the Best Hair Loss Treatment for Men in the UK?

The most effective treatment depends on the causes of your hair loss, severity, tolerance, overall health and individual goals. Broadly, for androgenetic hair loss, treatment options fall into three categories:

  • DHT suppression: Finasteride inhibits type II 5-alpha reductase, reducing DHT levels and slowing progression. Dutasteride suppresses both type I and II enzymes and may be considered in more resistant cases. Spironolactone is sometimes also used topically in men instead of finasteride or dutasteride as it provides similar actions through general androgen blocking. The main function of these agents is to stop hair follicle miniaturisation and damage by DHT and hence reduce hair shedding.
  • Follicle stimulation: Minoxidil stimulates hair follicles and prolongs the anagen phase. It can be used alone or combined with other therapies.
  • Supportive ingredients: Tretinoin may improve topical absorption. Caffeine may increase scalp microcirculation. Melatonin supports hair cycle regulation. Initially, hydrocortisone can also help reduce irritation in higher strength formulas.

Some men may only require a single ingredient to tackle their hair loss. However treatment with a combination of ingredients is often more effective than monotherapy. The best treatment depends on each individual’s needs.

Personalised Online Hair Loss Treatment for Men in the UK

Everyone is different and nowhere is this better reflected than in hair loss treatment. This is why we strongly believe in an individualised approach to everything including hair loss treatment for men which we provide in the UK. We design our personalised hair serums to address the main causes of hair loss in men but also to meet your specific needs and hair loss pattern. Here’s how we can help:

  • Detailed Online Consultation Your Way: We begin with an in-depth video or form (whatever you prefer) with a dedicated doctor to understand your hair loss concerns, medical history and treatment goals. This then allows us to create a customised treatment tailored to your unique needs.
  • Personalised Treatments Using Advanced Ingredients: Our hair loss serums contain science-backed ingredients which work together to reduce hair loss and promote regrowth. Your serum will be easy to use and incorporate into your daily routine.
  • Ongoing Support: Your doctor will provide continuous support and follow-up to monitor your progress and adjust your treatment plan as needed. You will be able to connect with them by email at any time throughout your treatment.

Ingredients Used in Our Topical Hair Loss Serums

We design a personalised hair loss treatment for each and every one of our patients to target their individual needs. Your doctor will also tweak your serum as needed at the end of each 3 month course based on your hair’s response. These are the ingredients we may use in our topical hair loss treatment serums for men:

  • Minoxidil: Stimulates hair follicles and promotes hair regrowth.
  • Finasteride: Inhibits type II 5-alpha reductase to reduce DHT levels and prevents further hair loss.
  • Dutasteride: Suppresses both type I and type II 5-alpha reductase for more potent DHT reduction. Effective for severe hair loss where other treatments may have failed.
  • Spironolactone: Reduces androgen levels. Sometimes used in men as an alternative to finasteride or dutasteride
  • Caffeine: Stimulates hair follicles and increases blood delivery to the scalp.
  • Melatonin: Regulates hair growth cycles and protects hair follicles from oxidative stress to increase hair density.
  • Tretinoin: May help increase absorption of Minoxidil and other ingredients.
  • Hydrocortisone: Reduces scalp irritation caused by higher strengths of Minoxidil and Tretinoin.

Your doctor will select the ingredients of your formula based on what they feel is safe and appropriate for you. In some cases, the best treatment may just be Minoxidil or a DHT blocker alone. Other times it’s best to both reduce DHT activity and stimulate the follicles, using Minoxidil and a DHT blocker together. Minoxidil works by widening the blood vessels in the scalp, so more oxygen and nutrients reach the follicles, stimulating growth and strengthening existing hair. Adding Finasteride then reduces DHT to prevent follicle shrinkage and further loss, and in more treatment-resistant cases your doctor may step up to Dutasteride. And if you’d rather avoid DHT blockers altogether, Minoxidil with caffeine and melatonin can support growth instead. Whichever design is right for you, the specialist pharmacy makes it fresh to your doctor’s prescription.

Why We Focus on Topical Hair Loss Treatments

Oral medications are effective for many men, but they are not the only approach to managing androgenetic hair loss. We focus on personalised topical formulations because they allow targeted treatment at the scalp while reducing unnecessary systemic exposure. Topical hair loss treatment enables us to:

  • Tailor ingredient combinations to your specific pattern of thinning
  • Adjust strengths and composition over time depending on response
  • Combine DHT modulation with follicle stimulation in one formulation
  • Improve effectiveness and tolerability through supportive ingredients
  • Maintain ongoing doctor supervision without requiring in-person visits

For some men, topical therapy provides a balanced approach between effectiveness and safety. For others, it may be the preferred starting point before considering oral medication. There is no universal hair loss treatment that works for all men. The right option requires careful individual assessment of suitability following medical review. Our goal is to design a topical treatment plan that reflects your stage of hair loss, goals and health. One serum, once a day, instead of a shelf of separate products.

How Long Do Hair Loss Treatments Take to Work?

The first 1-3 months are when the treatment is activating the hair follicles. In fact, you might actually experience more hair shedding during this period. Most men begin to see noticeable improvements in hair growth within the first 3-6 months of starting treatment. After which there should be gradual improvements although it may be at a different rate. However, individual results may vary, and it’s important to remain patient and consistent with the application of your prescribed hair loss serum. To maintain the results, it is crucial to continue using the treatment as directed by your doctor. Stopping the use of these treatments can lead to a gradual return of hair loss, as it is not possible to permanently cure the underlying causes. Check in regularly with your doctor so they can help with monitoring, advice and your next course.

Frequently asked questions

Your doctor will review your progress once you're nearing the end of each bottle (so every 3 months) and will then create the next treatment based on your progress. This may involve adding in or removing certain ingredients or changing strengths of active ingredients.

Results can vary, but most patients start noticing improvements within 3 to 6 months of consistent use.

We do not provide hair loss treatments for anyone pregnant or breastfeeding. There are also certain ingredients such as Finasteride, Dutasteride and Tretinoin that we will not add to your formula if someone in your household is pregnant as these can cause problems with foetal development.

While our treatments are generally well-tolerated, some individuals may experience mild side effects such as dryness, flaking or scalp irritation. It is also common to initially experience increased shedding. Our team will monitor your progress and make adjustments as needed. There are additional potential side effects depending on the composition of your formula. For more info visit the individual ingredient pages.

Yes, our formulations are designed to be gentle. During your consultation, we will tailor your treatment to ensure it suits you.

Hair regrowth from treatments like minoxidil, finasteride, and dutasteride typically require ongoing use. Discontinuing treatment may result in a gradual return of hair loss.

Our treatments are primarily designed for androgenetic alopecia (male and female pattern baldness) and other DHT-related hair loss conditions. They may not be suitable for hair loss caused by other factors, such as medical conditions or nutritional deficiencies. A consultation with one of our doctors can help determine if these treatments are right for you.

Determining the cause of hair loss can be straightforward or may require a doctor's evaluation and tests.

Men experiencing a receding hairline, patchy hair loss or gradual thinning likely have male pattern baldness, a permanent condition treatable with various hair loss treatments.

If sudden bald patches appear without an obvious cause, seeking medical attention is crucial. Sudden hair loss might result from conditions like alopecia areata, vitamin deficiencies, or medication side effects. These types of hair loss are typically temporary and often resolve with proper treatment of the underlying issue.

Although there isn’t a cure for hair loss, there are effective hair treatments. While these may slow hair loss or even reverse balding, they cannot provide permanent treatment. Please beware of any company claiming to “cure” your hair loss.

Our hair base ingredients are:

Ethanol, Propylene Glycol, TrichosolTM- Aqua, Lactic Acid, Polysorbate 20, Olivamidopropyl Betaine, Phenoxyethanol, Parfum, Rosmarinus Officinalis Leaf Oil, Lavandula Dentata Water, BHT, Juniperus Communis Fruit Oil, Juniperus Virginiana Oil, Amyris Balsmifera Bark Oil, Propanediol, Lavandula Angustifolia Oil, Melaleuca Alternifolia Leaf Oil, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil, Sodium Thiosulfate.

We also have water/ethanol only bases for people with sensitive or oily scalps. The amount of ethanol in the formula will vary depending on the active ingredients we add to your personalised hair loss treatment.

Compounded treatments like the ones we use are unlicensed medications because they are custom-made for each patient based on a specific formulation tailored to their unique needs. Unlike licensed medications, which are approved by regulatory bodies for general use, compounded treatments are created by pharmacists to meet the specific requirements of an individual patient as prescribed by their doctor. While they do not undergo the same approval process as licensed medications, they offer a personalised approach that can address specific concerns where a licensed treatment doesn't exist effectively under professional supervision.

It primarily prevents further miniaturisation. Regrowth varies between individuals.

Yes, it suppresses more DHT pathways and may be used in selected cases.

Yes, though results may be more modest depending on severity.

Dutasteride combined with minoxidil is typically the most potent approach, though suitability varies.

Hair loss treatment is generally long-term to maintain results.
