Minoxidil
Topical Minoxidil stimulates hair growth, increases thickness and reduces loss.
Minoxidil is now one of the most effective and popular treatments for stimulating hair follicles and promoting regrowth. It is a vasodilator that was originally used to treat high blood pressure and its ability to promote hair growth was discovered as a side effect. In the UK, Minoxidil is available as both an oral and topical treatment to hair loss in men and women.
Benefits in Hair Loss
The main way Minoxidil works is by widening the blood vessels and increasing blood flow to the hair follicles. This enhanced circulation delivers more oxygen, blood and nutrients to the follicles. Ultimately this can help to stimulate hair growth and strengthen existing hair. Although the exact mechanism by which Minoxidil promotes hair growth is not fully understood, it is thought to prolong the anagen phase (growth phase) of the hair cycle. Topical minoxidil offers several benefits for treating hair loss in men and women:
- Stimulates Hair Growth
- Slows Hair Loss
- Improves Hair Density
- Easy to Use & Reduced Likelihood of Systemic Side Effects Compared with Oral
- Can be Combined with Other Ingredients to Boost its Effects
Treatments with Topical Minoxidil
We design every one of our personalised hair loss treatments according to each of our patient’s concerns, goals, and wishes. Topical minoxidil is an ingredient that we commonly add to our formulations for the following treatments:
- Hair Loss Treatments for Men
- Hair Loss Treatments for Women
Complimentary Actives
Topical minoxidil is sometimes combined with other medicines or compounds to enhance its effects. The most common ones we use include:
- Tretinoin: may enhance the absorption of minoxidil and improve its effectiveness.
- Spironolactone: can help reduce androgen levels and treat hair loss in premenopausal women.
- Hydrocortisone: helps reduce scalp irritation caused by Minoxidil and/or Tretinoin.
- Finasteride: can reduce hair loss and promote regrowth by inhibiting the production of DHT.
- Dutasteride: like Finasteride this inhibits DHT and enhance hair regrowth.
- Biotin: strengthens hair and supports keratin production.
- Caffeine: stimulates hair follicles and increases blood circulation to the scalp to boost the effects of minoxidil.
- Melatonin: regulates the hair growth cycle and protects hair follicles from oxidative stress. Can help increase hair density and length.
Topical Minoxidil Prescription Treatments in the UK
In the UK, topical Minoxidil is available both over-the-counter and by prescription most commonly in spray, foam or serum form. Over-the-counter minoxidil typically comes in 2% and 5% strengths for women and men respectively. However, higher concentrations and those formulated with other ingredients like Finasteride, Duasteride or Spironolactone require a prescription. We add Minoxidil to our personalised hair loss serums where we think it is appropriate and safe for the patient. The concentration and other ingredients we use depend on each individual patient’s hair loss and medical history.
