Finasteride
This is reduces DHT levels to treat androgenic hair loss.
Topical finasteride is a prescription only medication in the UK which is used to treat hair loss. It works by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which plays a key role in hair loss. As such, Finasteride is particularly useful in androgenetic alopecia (male and female pattern baldness). By reducing DHT levels in the scalp, topical Finasteride can help to prevent hair thinning and promote regrowth.
Benefits of Finasteride in Hair Loss Treatment
The main way topical Finasteride works is by blocking an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. This enzyme is responsible for converting testosterone into DHT. Elevated levels of DHT can shrink hair follicles which leads to hair thinning and loss. By reducing DHT levels, Finasteride can help to maintain hair follicle health and encourage new hair growth. The key benefits of using topical Finasteride in hair loss treatments include:
- Reduces Hair Loss
- Promotes Hair Regrowth
- Improves Hair Density
- Easy to Use & Reduced Risk of Systemic Side Effects Compared with Oral
- Combined with Other Hair Stimulating Ingredients
Hair Loss Treatments with Topical Finasteride
We design each and every one of our personalised treatments based on the individual patient’s concerns, goals, and preferences. Generally, topical finasteride is a useful ingredient which we use in the following treatments:
- Hair Loss Treatments for Men
- Hair Loss Treatments for Women
Combining with Other Actives
We usually use topical Finasteride in combination with with other medication and compounds to enhance its effects on hair loss. These are some of the most common actives we may use with it:
- Minoxidil: this duo can promote hair regrowth and improve hair density more effectively than using either treatment alone.
- Biotin: strengthens hair and supports keratin production which enhances overall hair health.
- Caffeine: stimulates hair follicles and increases blood circulation to the scalp.
- Melatonin: regulates hair growth cycles and protects hair follicles from oxidative stress which improves hair density and length.
- Tretinoin: can enhance the absorption of hair loss treatments.
- Hydrocortisone: helps reduce scalp irritation caused by some types of hair loss treatments.

Topical Finasteride is generally considered safe for most individuals. However, some users may experience side effects such as scalp irritation, itching or dryness. It also carries the risk of allergic reaction. Unlike oral finasteride, topical application should reduce the risk of systemic side effects like but they can not be ruled out. These include sexual side effects such as decreased libido, erectile dysfunction and reduced ejaculate volume. These effects can sometimes be long-lasting, even after discontinuing the medication. Other potential side effects include breast tenderness, discharge or enlargement (gynecomastia), testicular pain and an increased risk of high-grade prostate cancer. Some users may experience allergic reactions, such as rash, itching, or swelling, and psychological effects like depression and anxiety. Additionally, Finasteride can lower PSA levels, which may mask the diagnosis of prostate cancer. If you experience side effects, discontinue use and seek medical help.
