How We Correct a Gummy Smile Without Surgery

A gummy Smile when the upper lip lifts up far above your upper teeth when you smile. This is exposes your gums and makes the upper lip look thinner. The most common cause of this is due to overactivity of the muscles tat elevate the upper lip. The gummy smile can also be worsened by a naturally thin upper lip. If this happens, it can expose the gums even more. Thankfully, we can correct a gummy smile by reducing the activity of the muscle that elevates the upper lip. In patients with naturally thin lips, we can also combine this treatment with lip fillers.

Gummy smile treatment with Botox involves injecting Botulinum toxin at the junction of the nostril and nose to mouth fold. As a result, the muscles that pull up the lip will weaken. You will start to notice an effect within the next 3-10 days and the full result will be visible 2 -3weeks after the treatment

Botox injections weaken the muscles that excessively pull on the upper lip. This allows you to smile without your gums showing. We focus the treatment in specific points in the muscles to produce maximal effect and reduce any risk of complications.

You will have a consultation with one of our aesthetic doctors. During this time, they will record your medical history, discuss with you your problem areas and outline the treatment options that would be suitable for you. Afterwards, your doctor will examine your whole face and develop a personalised treatment plan for you. If your personalised treatment plan includes anti-wrinkle injections and you are happy to proceed with the treatment, they will take your consent for the procedure. Additionally, you will also have a photograph taken of the area you want treating. You can then either have the treatment on the same day as the consultation or book another appointment.

If you decide to have the treatment and our doctor deems that it is appropriate based on a full consultation, then the doctor will administer Botox injections with a very fine needle into the muscles causing a gummy smile. These injections are not painful and there is no down time after the treatment.

After your treatment you will be given aftercare instructions on what to do for the first few days and any side-effects to look out for. Additionally we also offer a free follow-up consultation within a month of treatment and provide a free top-up if necessary. The effects usually last 3-4 months and then further treatment will be required if you wish to maintain the effect.

The most important criteria to decide if you are a good candidate for gummy smile treatment is if you have excess gums showing when you smile and if this is due to muscle overactivity. Based on this, you facial structure and medical history your doctor will determine if this treatment is right for you.

We use botox Botulinum Toxin injections to treat gummy smiles. Botox is an FDA approved drug and has been used safely for both medical and cosmetic purposes for more than 20 years. Like any treatment, side effects can occur. For example in the case of Botulinum gummy smile correction there is a risk of mild bruising, allergy and an asymmetric smile although these can be corrected or will fade in time. We reduce the risk of complications by ensuring that a trained and experienced aesthetic doctor delivers these treatments in a safe environment.

Most patients do not have this problem. However, you may experience a little bit of heaviness when smiling initially. This feeling usually goes away after a week.

We only use Botox for all our Botulinum toxin injections.

In general it takes about 2-3 weeks before you see the full effect and results will typically last 3-4 months.

Your smile will just go back to where it was. You can stop and start having treatment at any time without any problems.
