How to Get Honey Skin

Honey skin is all about plump, smooth and dewy looking skin. It was the first Korean beauty skincare trend, built around products that deliver deep, long-lasting moisture and repair. The aim is smooth, supple and radiant skin, much like honey. It faded for a while, mainly because people found the long routines hard to commit to. However, honey skin does not have to be difficult. In this article we explore the key products and a simple routine to get there.

What is Honey Skin?

Like many skincare trends, honey skin came from South Korea, where moisture and nutrition have always sat at the heart of skincare. The term describes skin that looks smooth, supple and richly nourished. The approach is to layer lightweight products to build radiant, soft skin. It also focuses on long-term skin health rather than short-term fixes.

Overall, honey skin strikes a balance between moisture, glow and nutrition. So, the idea is to keep the skin deeply moist and plump without looking shiny or greasy. Ultimately, the result is glowing, healthy skin that holds onto water over time.

Honey skin is one of several related glow trends, and they are not the same. Here is how it compares:

  • Glass skin: This focuses on ultra-smooth, flawless and almost glass-like skin through deep moisture, gentle exfoliating and clearing products. The goal of glass skin and its richer sibling ultra-expensive skin is a clear, shiny, transparent-looking finish. Honey skin is more modest and relies on smooth, moist, glowing skin.
  • Jello skin: At the core of this look is bounce and elasticity. Jello skin should be ultra plump with a soft, jelly-like spring, and it leans on both skincare and diet to boost bounce.
  • Butter skin: This is more about texture, aiming for a smooth, lit-from-within satin finish. Butter skin needs rich moisture and smoothing, and unlike honey skin it relies on makeup as well as skincare.
  • Dewy skin: This is the lightest, most everyday take on glowing skin. Dewy skin combines a simple daily routine with a touch of luminous makeup, whereas honey skin is purely skincare led.

Which Skincare Ingredients Help?

The key to plump, dewy and radiant skin is using the right ingredients. These should boost moisture, strengthen the skin barrier and enhance glow. If you are building a routine for honey skin, look for these:

  • Honey and propolis extract: They draw water into the skin and offer antibacterial and anti-inflammatory benefits. Honey calms irritation, whilst propolis provides antioxidant protection and supports skin barrier repair.
  • Snail mucin: A K-beauty staple, snail mucin is packed with hyaluronic acid, glycoproteins and growth factors that promote moisture, healing and firmness. It also helps repair the skin barrier and smooth fine lines.
  • Hyaluronic acid: One of the most famous skincare ingredients, hyaluronic acid can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. It keeps the skin moist, plump and smooth.
  • Centella asiatica (cica): This soothing plant extract calms redness, repairs damage and strengthens the skin barrier. Cica suits sensitive or reactive skin, since it holds water whilst reducing inflammation.
  • Peptides: These amino acid chains support collagen production, improve firmness and seal in moisture. Peptides help keep skin firm and plump, which is key to the supple look of honey skin.
  • Ceramides: These lipids act as the glue between skin cells, forming a barrier that locks in moisture and shields against damage. Strengthening the barrier with ceramides supports the long-lasting moisture honey skin depends on.
  • Niacinamide: This versatile ingredient hydrates, brightens and evens tone whilst reducing redness and supporting barrier function. It also helps minimise pores and reduce sebum, so it suits all skin types, including oily and acne-prone skin.

What’s the Skincare Routine for Honey Skin?

Importantly, honey skin does not need a long or expensive routine. You can start fresh or fold a few key products into what you already use. Here is a simple routine for smooth, glowing, supple skin:

  • Gentle cleanser: Cleanse without stripping the skin of its natural oils. A soft cream, gel or balm cleanser removes dirt and grime whilst keeping skin soft, and harsh foaming cleansers with sulphates are best avoided since they dry out the skin and weaken the microbiome and barrier. Look for honey extract, glycerin and cica.
  • Hydrating toner or essence: This restores moisture straight after cleansing and preps the skin to absorb serums and creams. Look for propolis extract to nourish, hyaluronic acid for deep moisture and niacinamide to brighten skin and strengthen the barrier.
  • Lightweight serum: A light serum locks in moisture and plumps the skin. Look for royal jelly extract or snail mucin to support collagen, peptides to improve firmness and beta-glucan for deep moisture. Water-based serums absorb quickly without feeling sticky.
  • Nourishing moisturiser: A lightweight but rich cream seals in hydration and reinforces the barrier. Look for ceramides to limit water loss, squalane to mimic the skin’s natural oils and shea butter to soften.
  • Sunscreen in the mornings: Sun exposure dehydrates the skin, breaks down collagen and drives skin ageing, so daily sunscreen is essential. Choose a broad-spectrum mineral or chemical sunscreen of at least SPF 30.

Used daily, this routine builds honey skin over time. You can also use it to boost the effects of, and reduce irritation from, products like Retinol or tretinoin. Honey skin does not require in-clinic treatments, but if you want to amplify your efforts, options like skin boosters and microneedling can help. These are carried out in person rather than through an online clinic like ours.

If you want plump, glowing and deeply nourished skin, the honey skin trend is worth trying. It is all about improving your skin from within so it looks and feels healthy in the long term. You do not need a fussy or expensive routine either, since a few key products used daily will get you there whatever your skin type.
