Skin Peels (Archive)
What is a skin peel?
Skin peels improve the condition and texture of the skin. The treatment uses chemical peels that resurface the skin by removing the layers of dead cells and exposing new skin underneath it. Peels are most commonly acids but can also come as enzymes which break up the connections between dead skin cells in order to refresh the skin. There are a wide variety of peels which can be used to target a range of skin problems and they come in different strengths. At City Skin Clinic we offer a choice between superficial skin refresher peels and medical peels both of which are custom designed for your individual skin needs.
Please note we no longer offer non surgical aesthetic treatments but have kept the below info as part of our archives.
What can peels be used for?
Chemical peels can be used to treat and enhance the skin in many different ways. This is affected by the type of peel used and the strength of the peel. The most common types of peels are:
– Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) – these include glycolic acid, lactic acid, citric acid, tartaric acid and malic acid. They work by penetrating the skin to remove dead cells and stimulate skin cells to regenerate and deposit collagen. – AHAs are great for treating uneven skin tone, hyperpigmentation and wrinkles.
– Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) – the most common BHA is salicylic acid but this group also includes benzoic and butyric acid. BHAs remove dead cells from the surface of the skin and also penetrate pores to dissolve sebum and dead cells that are clogging them. This makes BHAs excellent for use in acne, oily skin types, blackheads, blemishes, breakouts and milia.
– Polyhydroxy Acids (PHAs) – gluconolactone is the most common but PHAs also include galactose and lactobionic acid. Unlike AHAs and BHAs these acids can not penetrate deep into the skin and hence only act superficially. As such they can gently exfoliate the skin whilst maintaining its moisture and not causing hypersensitivity to the sun. Furthermore, PHAs also fight glycation (the process by which sugar weakens the collagen and elastic in the skin) as well as stimulate growth and repair of the epidermal layer of the skin. All in all PHAs are great for use in evening skin tone, smoothing wrinkles or texture and on sensitive skin or rosacea.
– Enzyme Peels – the most popular examples of these are papain, bromelain and pumpkin enzyme peels. These skin peels are a little gentler than chemical peels (AHAs, BHAs and PHAs) and work by breaking up the connections between skin cells on the surface of the skin to speed up the exfoliation of dead cells. They help brighten, smooth and refresh the skin without causing much irritation or down time.
