Aftercare 101 – Chemical Peels

As a professional treatment, chemical peels are great for resurfacing and rejuvenating; they can enhance both the health and quality of your skin. We have discussed previously in our blog post –The Insider’s guide to Chemical Peels– everything there is to know about these advanced facials, but we wanted to give you, our beloved readers an ultimate guide to aftercare. In order to optimise your results, there is some homework required…but do not worry as we have done most of it for you!

So read on, if you want to know our 5 simple steps to help your skin look refreshed and radiant post peel!

What should you expect?

Before we get started, let’s take a very brief moment to get the science stuff out of the way (yes, it is important!). Chemical peels break down the bonds between the superficial dead skin cell layers and the new, healthy cells below. As a result, the dead cells shred and fall away. This is not as scary as it sounds.

As a result, your skin will be mildly sensitive, red and possibly flaky after your peel. This varies from person to person. Flaky skin is one of the signs that the treatment is working well so please do not be concerned if this occurs. Yes, I am aware it sounds unpleasant but the outcome is fresh and healthier skin. A newer and enhanced version of you!

Tip No.1:

Redness will reduce naturally within a few hours, however, you can speed up the repair process with cooling methods. Any cold compress or even a mist could help.

Tip No.2:

Hands off! Picking your skin can result in scarring so I strongly advise against this!

Tip No.3:

Due to the sensitive nature of your treated skin, other facial treatments and skin scrubs are best avoided for at least one week following chemical peel treatment. Although, to encourage the flaky cells to fall, a sugar polish can be used.

Tip No.4:

Following your treatment with City Skin clinic, moisturiser and SPF will have been applied, however the next day when washing your skin, I advise using cool water with a gentle cleanser. It is best to pat your skin dry with a soft towel to avoid aggravation.

Tip No.5:

Finally, the best results come from establishing a consistent skincare regime. This will ensure longer-term that your skin stays healthy with that natural glow. Therefore, I recommend using an anti-oxidant serum, moisturiser and SPF every day as part of your day-time routine post-peel. Please be aware that initially your skin may be sensitive to the anti-oxidant so I recommend using it only once or twice a week until your skin recuperates.

Here at City Skin Clinic, we aim to be approachable and accessible for all of our clients, regardless of what treatment is offered. We want to provide a personalised service even after you leave our clinic! So, everyone we see is provided with our contact details, in addition to a follow up appointment. This is where we can really review the outcome of your treatment, or even to discuss any concerns you may have. This approach enables us to walk alongside the patient through their aesthetic journey.
