Melatonin

Melatonin protects hair follicles from damage and prolongs growth

Naturally produced by the body, melatonin’s main function is to regulate sleep cycles. However, melatonin receptors are also present on hair cells. Here it also plays a role in protecting the hair follicle and stimulating growth. As a topical treatment, melatonin can directly act on the scalp to neutralise free radicals and prolong the hair growth cycle. It also reduces inflammation and may even delay greying. As such, topical melatonin is increasingly available in hair loss and beard growth treatments in the UK.

Benefits in Hair Loss

There is growing scientific evidence to suggest that melatonin can act as an effective anti-hair loss ingredient by influencing several key biological mechanisms. Chief amongst these is melatonin’s ability to prolong the anagen phase of the hair cycle which is the active hair growth phase. Another effect of melatonin is its powerful antioxidant properties which help to reduce oxidative stress. This can protect human hair follicles from premature damage such as by dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and support its natural regeneration process. There is even some evidence to suggest that melatonin may help regulate circadian rhythms within the hair follicle cells themselves. This can further enhance their growth potential and metabolic function. As such, the main benefits of using topical melatonin in hair growth treatments include:

  • Stimulates Hair Growth
  • Slows Androgenetic Hair Loss (Male & Female Pattern Baldness)
  • Improves Hair Density
  • Protects Follicles from Oxidative Stress
  • Can Be Combined with Other Ingredients to Enhance Their Effects

Treatments with Topical Melatonin

At City Skin Clinic, we use topical melatonin in our personalised hair loss and beard growth treatments where appropriate depending on the patient’s needs. We may add melatonin to the following custom formulations to help regrow hair:

Complimentary Actives

Generally, we tend to combine topical melatonin solution with other hair growth ingredients to boost their combined efforts. The composition of your formula depends on your type of hair loss and individual patient circumstances. The most common ingredients we use alongside melatonin include:

  • Tretinoin: this retinoid can help enhance the absorption of hair growth ingredients in to the scalp.
  • Minoxidil: stimulates hair regrowth and increases density.
  • Spironolactone: helps reduce androgen effects on follicles to treat hair loss in some cases of pattern hair loss.
  • Hydrocortisone: reduces scalp irritation.
  • Finasteride: reduces hair loss and promote regrowth by inhibiting the actions of DHT on follicles.
  • Dutasteride: inhibits harmful DHT effects on follicles to enhance hair regrowth.
  • Biotin: can strengthen hair by supporting keratin production.
  • Caffeine: stimulates hair growth, reduces shedding and increases blood supply to the scalp.

Topical Melatonin Hair Loss Treatments in the UK

In the UK, topical and oral melatonin is a prescription only medicine even for hair loss. Whilst it does not have FDA or MHRA approval for hair thinning, it is sometimes used unlicensed for conditions like androgenetic alopecia (AGA). For hair growth, low melatonin levels can be included in compounded prescription serums and creams for appropriate patients. Melatonin may be paired with other active ingredients like topical Minoxidil, Finasteride, Caffeine or Spironolactone depending on the clinical need.

At City Skin Clinic, we create personalised hair loss and beard growth serums that may include melatonin where appropriate. We tailor every formulation to the patient’s specific hair loss, medical history and treatment goals. Our doctors aim to create custom formulas which can maximise results whilst minimising side effects. Important Information

Topical melatonin is usually a safe and well-tolerated ingredient in hair loss treatments when used as directed under the care of a dermatologist of healthcare provider. However, it’s still important to be aware of potential side effects and considerations. Crucially, whilst Melatonin supplements are available over the counter in other countries, it is a prescription only treatment in the UK. Additionally, whilst it is increasingly used in medicine including in dermatology, more clinical studies are needed to fully establish its benefits for hair health.

Safety and Side Effects

Most people tolerate topical melatonin treatment well especially at the concentrations commonly used in compounded hair loss formulas. That said, some people may experience mild scalp irritation, redness, itching or dryness especially when starting treatment. These symptoms are typically short-lived and often resolve with continued use or minor adjustments in formulation. If you develop more severe irritation or signs of an allergic reaction (e.g. rash, swelling or persistent pain) you must stop using the product immediately and seek medical advice.

Contraindications

Generally, topical application of melatonin is safe for use ob thinning hair. However, there are certain circumstances in which you should exercise caution or get medical supervision. These include:

  • Scalp Conditions: If you have existing scalp disease such as eczema, psoriasis, fungal infections or open wounds, speak with your healthcare provider before using topical melatonin. This is because it may worsen your condition or delay healing.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: The safety of topical melatonin during pregnancy or breastfeeding has not been conclusively studied. As a precaution, always consult with your doctor before use in these situations.
  • Allergies: Avoid melatonin-based treatments if you have a known allergy to melatonin or any other ingredients in the formula. Always check the full ingredient list before starting a new topical product.

Storage and Shelf Life

Store your melatonin-containing hair care products in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Always check the pharmacy labels for shelf life and expiry dates.

Compounded treatments like the ones we use are unlicensed medications because they are custom-made for each patient based on a specific formulation tailored to their unique needs. Unlike licensed medications (e.g. oral finasteride), which are approved by regulatory bodies for general use, compounded treatments are created by pharmacists to meet the specific requirements of an individual patient as prescribed by their doctor. While they do not undergo the same approval process as licensed medications, they offer a personalised approach that can address specific concerns where a licensed treatment doesn't exist effectively under professional supervision.
