Lip enhancement with lip fillers at City Skin Clinic

At City Skin Clinic, our mission is to provide expert lip enhancement using Juvéderm® hyaluronic acid lip fillers completely personalised to your face. Hence all our treatments are carefully tailored to suit each individual patient’s overall lip and face shape. In our experience, this gives individualised beautifully plump natural looking lips and avoids that generic overinflated or “trout pout” look. We use Juvéderm® lip fillers although we can also offer patients the option of Teosyal® or another specialist filler if they prefer and we are happy that it would deliver the best results. Please visit our products page for more information about the different brands that we use.

What is a dermal filler?

The dermal fillers we use at City Skin Clinic are sterile colourless gels made of synthetic hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally-occurring substance in the skin which gives skin hydration, elasticity and plump appearance. Dermal fillers are often used to treat scarring, wrinkles, and volume loss in ageing or thin skin. They come in a number of different thicknesses and formulations depending on their use.

Which type of dermal filler is used for lip enhancement at City Skin Clinic?

At City Skin Clinic we use Juvederm for lip enhancement. Juvederm hylauronic acid dermal fillers are non-animal and non-human cross-linked hyaluronic acid gels made in the laboratory. These fillers have a long standing safety profile, have been in the market for a very long time and are FDA approved. They are also temporary and dissolvable. For smokers’ lines we use Teosyal RHA as this type of filler delivers excellent results in highly mobile areas of the face.

Which part of the lip can be enhanced with lip fillers?

Lip fillers can be used to enhance the lip in many different ways:

  • Vermilion border (lip outline): dermal fillers can create definition, increase lip width and reduce lipstick feathering/bleeding
  • Lip volume: lip fillers can augment the body of the upper and lower lip to enhance volume and give a fuller pout
  • Cupids bow: lip fillers can add definition and contouring as well as lift the lip
  • Oral commissures (lines going down from the corners of the mouth): corners of the mouth can be lifted to give a younger and happier look
  • Marionette lines (“sad lines” from corner of lips downward to the chin): lip fillers can lift and eliminate the appearance of these “puppet lines” to rejuvenate the mouth
  • Philtrum ridges: these columns go from the upper lip towards the nose and can be defined by lip fillers
  • Perioral lines or fine vertical lines (“smokers’ lines): these lines can be smoothed out and eliminated

What happens during a consultation for lip fillers?

We offer a detailed consultation with Dr. Ibrahim at our City of London or Crouch End, North London locations. During the consultation our expert doctor will assess your medical history and face shape. She will then work with you to design a personalised treatment plan to help you get the best outcome. Following that, if you want to proceed with the treatment and have considered all of the options, she will go through the consent form with you. The treatment can be done on the same day as the consultation if there are no medical contraindications. However, if you prefer to take your time and think about it that’s no problem at all.  We are more than happy to book you in for another appointment at a later date should you decide to have the procedure. Finally, please note that we do not provide treatment for patients under the age of 21.

What does the treatment involve?

Before the treatment: We cleanse the face and use a sterile solution to prep the area for injection, We then either apply a numbing cream or use injections (as per your preference) to ensure that the lips are numb to eliminate discomfort during the procedure.

The procedure: Juvederm dermal filler is injected at specific locations in and around the lip by the doctor to create the definition, lift, shape and volume required. Your doctor will then gently massage the lips to ensure that the filler is evenly distributed, settles and gives a smooth natural appearance. At different points during the procedure you will be given a mirror to see how the treatment is going and ask any questions you would like.

After the treatment:  Your doctor will give you written instructions about what to do after the procedure. The results of the enhancement are visible immediately but will appear slightly bigger than what they ultimately settle down to in a few days.

Frequently Asked Questions

You will have a consultation with our expert aesthetic doctor. During this, she will record your medical history, find out about your problem areas and discuss suitable treatment options with you. Our doctor will work with you to create a personalised treatment plan unique to you.
If after the consultation you decide to have the treatment, then the doctor will apply numbing cream or use an injection to completely numb the lips. Which one you have will be entirely up to you. After numbing the lips, we administer the lip filler with a very fine needle. The results are immediately visible and you will be able to have a look during the procedure to see how the lips are progressing should you wish to. We use Juvederm lip fillers although we can provide Teosyal puresense should you prefer (please visit our products page to find out more).
Immediately after injection of the lip fillers there is usually some swelling and sometimes a little bruising around the treated area. This can be worse the day after the treatment but settles down within a few days. In some people this can be up to a week (sometimes longer). We offer a free follow-up consultation after your treatment. You're also welcome to contact us by phone or e-mail anytime for ongoing advice or questions.
The effects of lip fillers normally last up to four to six months depending on your skin and body type. If you like the effect, then you will need more lip fillers to maintain the effect. If you're unhappy with the result then we can dissolve some or all of the fillers with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. We provide this treatment free of charge for our clients although we're pleased to say no one has wanted it yet!
In short, no. We use numbing cream or numbing injections (its up to you) to ensure that you are comfortable and not in pain. On top of that, all of our dermal fillers also containing lignocaine anaesthetic which numbs the lips from the inside.
Yes, you will see the effect of lip fillers straight away. The lips will however appear a little bigger straight after the injection and you will see the final result after a few days.
We do not treat anyone under the age of 21, pregnant women or those breast feeding.
As with anything in life, there is always a small risk of a adverse event. Dermal fillers like Juvederm, Teosyal, Restylene and Perlane can cause cold sores to reactivate (if you have previously had a cold sore). Also, there is a rare but possible risk of allergy. Other possible side effects include uneveness, lumps or infection although these are very rare in experienced hands. Bruising and swelling can occur after fillers and depend on a number of factors. We minimise these by our injection technique and advise to ice the area after treatment.
